Children -

Sports at St Anne’s 2016-2017

“You can’t put a limit on anything.  The more you dream the further you get.”

– Michael Phelps

We provide a variety of sporting opportunities at St Anne’s.  We have an exciting provision of sports in the curriculum, plus our lunch time clubs and after school clubs.  We also participate in friendly and competitive matches with local schools and have competed within the South West Area of Schools. We enjoy having professional coaches in to teach our children.

In April 2013, the government announced that £150million would be released to fund primary school physical education and sport as part of the London 2012 Olympic legacy.   Please read how we have used our Sports Premium funding to support the Sports provision within our school.

Gold Mark  Award St Anne’s has been awarded the School Games Gold Mark Award for their commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2015/16.  This is a brilliant achievement as it confirms what talented children we have at St Anne’s.

SPORTS COACHES During Term 5 we were lucky enough to have sports coaches join us in school to teach the children different sporting skills. The skills the children learn help them to take part in the Level Two School Games events. Sasha O’Neil has been teaching Y5@ Hewish and Y2@West Wick the techniques of gymnastics. Y6 have been working on their athletic talents with Dave Turner. Y2 and Y4 have been learning new football skills with James Howiantz from FA football skills.

SCHOOL GAMES SPORTS DAY

The sun shone brightly on what was going to be two fun packed days of sporting activities.

Busy Bees and Key Stage One @West Wick

On Wednesday 24th May we had the first ever School Games sports day @West Wick. The children paraded onto the field waving their School Games flags. The children in each class were put into coloured teams. Then each class took it in turn to run their seaside themed races, scoring points for their coloured team. We had a flip flop fling, a donkey derby, an obstacle race and running races. We even had fish for the relay batons! The winning team was the red team. A family picnic followed for everyone to enjoy

Hewish

On Thursday 25th May @Hewish it was their turn for fun and games. Busy Bees and KS1 children paraded onto the field waving their school games flags ready to take part in the seaside races. They flung their flip flops and rode their donkeys and ran as fast as they could in the obstacle race, running races and pass the fish relays, all the time collecting points for their team. The winning team was the green team. After our whole school family picnic it was the turn of our KS2 children. As the children paraded on to the field waving their school games flags the air was electric with anticipation for the forthcoming races. Shane German North Somerset School Sports Manager officially opened our School Games Sports Day. Our dance festival group from the School Games Dance Festival preformed both their dances. The children competed against each other within their classes. We had the traditional sprint race, hurdles, javelin and relay. We also included a School Games Medley Race which showcased some of the school games events that the children have taken part in, which included rugby, hockey, football and tennis. On both days in the morning and afternoon activities the parents and younger siblings were also able to show their running skills in fun races. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends that came to cheer on their children. The two days were filled with our children having a wonderful time.

Busy Bees and Key Stage One @Hewish

Key Stage Two

ROUNDERS FESTIVAL On Wednesday 24th May Y6 took part in a rounders festival at Uphill Cricket Club. It was a lovely opportunity for the whole class to be able to take part. We played 3 games in our pool group and then played a friendly final. The children showed wonderful sportsmanship and supported each other brilliantly with their fantastic teamwork skills. The whole class played really well in their fielding and batting skills. Thank you to Mrs Youhill for helping at this event.

Wheel Chair Basket Ball On  Friday 12 May Year 4 , 5 and 6  had the opportunity to take part in a Wheelchair Basket Ball workshop. Kevin Ogborne the head coach of the South West Scorpions Wheelchair Basket Ball Team took these fantastic sessions. The children were able to try out this sport and learn how different it is to play using a wheelchair rather than running around with the ball. This has been a good experience for all the children to understand the differences of playing sports being disabled and able bodied.

Archery and Netball County Games Level Three

ARCHERY COUNTY GAMES As we were crowned North Somerset Champions in Archery, we were very proud that our team represented North Somerset at the Level Three county games at Bristol Grammar School playing field on 27th April . Representatives from across four counties (North Somerset, Bristol, BANES, and South Gloucestershire) took part in this event. Again our team had to perform three archery skills of target, clout and flight earning points for the team and individual scores. They all kept their nerve and concentration brilliantly and performed each discipline with expertise. The children worked as a team with wonderful support and encouragement for each other. I am so very proud to say that we are the 2017 County Champions. This is a huge achievement for the children as they are the best from across four counties. Thank you to Paul Maines from Gordano Valley Archers for the fantastic coaching that you have provided for the children. Well done to Brooke, Eleanor, Charlie and Jacob, Thank you to Miss Sims for helping at this event.

NETBALL

NETBALL COUNTY GAMES We were also crowned North Somerset Champions in Netball, and again were very proud to represent North Somerset at the Level Three County games at Bristol Grammar School on 27th April. Teams from the same four counties took part. We played seven very close games; winning three and, on the games we lost, only losing by one or two goals. Our team played lovely netball, passing the ball with skill. Our defence and attack was on fine form. We went into the play offs for seventh place and won. We knew the standard of play at this competition was going to be good. The girls were a credit in how well they played and supported each other brilliantly. Well done to Chloe, Emily, Alice, Ella, Tilly, Melissa, Iona.

TENNIS AND TRI-GOLF EVENT

On Wednesday 3rd May teams from Y3 and Y4 took part in the School Games Level Two events at Bristol Grammar School Playing Fields. Tennis – We had a team from each year group taking part in this event. Our A team played three very close games. The children showed good skill in hitting and returning the ball which produced some great rallies. We then went into the friendly finals winning our game. The B team took part in a round robin of friendly games. The team also played lovely rallies of tennis, showing good control and ball skill. Everyone had a lot of fun using the tennis skills they had learnt during their PE lessons. Well done to Toby, Rio, Charlotte, Maddison, Harvey, James, Ella and Sophie. Thank you to Dean Cope our tennis coach for coming and supporting the tennis teams.

Tri-Golf – A team made up from children from both year groups took part in this event. The team showed great support for each other at each of the golf stations. At the stations they had to use different golfing skills of drive, chip and putt the ball to score points for their team. They used their very good team work to work together. St Anne’s finished in third place. Well done to Abi, Eliza, Toby, Oliver, Georgia, T, Luca, Clayton, Daisy and Niamh. Thank you to Mrs Youhill for helping at this event.

AFTER SCHOOL NETBALL AND FOOTBALL MATCHES

On 3rd May we had a return after school football and netball game against Heron’s Moor Academy. A team of Y3 and Y4 footballers and Y5 and Y6 netballers each played a game. The football team played brilliantly and showed lovely ball skills. They passed the ball well working really well as a team. Both sides were battling to take control of the ball and game. A final score was a win to St Anne’s of 4-2. Well done to Jack, Rio, Harrison, Clayton, Addison, Toby and Harvey. In the netball match St Anne’s played quality netball passing the ball with excellent skill. The end result doesn’t reflect how well Heron’s Moor played. Our shooters were on fine form and our defence worked hard to keep Heron’s Moor out of the shooting circle. A final score was a win of 10 – 1 to St Anne’s. Well done to Tilly, Chloe, Emily, Lucy, Olivia, Lucy and Melissa. On 9th May we played an away Y5 and Y6 football match against Heron’s Moor Academy. Our team worked well together from the start, passing the ball lovely and showing good ball skill. We showed very good team work. It was end to end football for most of the game with both attackers only just missing the goal with their shots. A final score was a win of 3-0 to Heron’s Moor. Well done to Mathew, Charlie, Jacob, Ella, Melissa, Finley, Luca, Samuel, James and Jack. Thank you to all the parents who supported at all these games.

They collected points for the team and an individual score as well. They took to the floor and vault with confidence and timed their moves perfectly, finishing in fifth place. Olivia and Elijah achieved joint third place in the individual scores. Well done to Tom, T, Gj, Olivia and Elijah. Thank you to Mrs Youhill for helping at this event.

The children took part in a series of multi-skills games to help develop and extend their ability. They ran, jumped, threw bean bags and balls into hoops and at targets, and had a turn at Kurling. They took part in lots of different activities to challenge them and they learnt new skills throughout the morning. Well done to Oona, Kayleigh, Daisy, Jack, William, Lucas, Romey, Jack, Brandon, Kyra, Ella and Katie. Thank you again to Mrs Youhill for helping at this event.

ARCHERY AND QUICK STICKS HOCKEY EVENTS

Hockey On 16th March a Y5 hockey team and a Y5 and Y6 archery team took part in a Level Two School Games event at Priory Academy. Hockey – We played three very close pool group games, with end to end play. In each game we narrowly missed out on a win each time by one goal. We had many shots at goal but sadly they were just off target. We had a good team spirit and supported each other brilliantly. Our passing was good and we intercepted the ball well. After the pool games we played a friendly final, winning 2-1. Well done to Floyd, James, William, Alexa, Rosanna and Ellie.

IMG_4138 IMG_4129 IMG_4128 IMG_4127 IMG_4139

Archery – Our two teams had to perform three archery skills: target, clout and flight. They had two attempts at each challenge to score points for their team and to get an individual score. Each of the children held their nerve, concentrated well and showed brilliant support for each other. I am so proud to say that our Y6 team finished in first place and our Y5 team came fifth. We went into this event defending our North Somerset Champions title and happily we retained it with our win. In the individual scores Charlie was the second highest placed boy and Jacob was the fourth highest. Brooke was the second highest placed girl and Eleanor was the eighth highest. This is a fantastic achievement for all the children. Thank you to Paul Maines from Gordano Valley Archers for the wonderful coaching that he provided for the children. Well done to Brooke, Eleanor, Charlie and Jacob. Thank you to Mrs Youhill and Mrs Fell for helping at this event.

TAG RUGBY EVENT

On 23rd March a Y5 team took part in a Level Two School Games tag rugby event at Hornets Rugby Club. We played four games in our pool group. The team passed the ball well keeping their attacking line and scoring some lovely tries. We held a good defensive line when our opponents were on the attack and we took many tag belts. The whole team played some good rugby. We finished as runners up in our pool group, but were beaten by Sandford in the quarter finals 3-1. Thank you to Glenn and Lee from Weston Rugby Club for coaching the children. Well done to Talia, Emily, Ellie, Olivia, Jai, Ethan, Ewan, Finley, Jack and Luca. HIGH FIVE NETBALL TOURNAMENT

On 4th April a team from our after school netball club took part in a level two school games netball event at Bristol Grammar School. In our small schools pool group we played five games winning every one without conceding a goal. The team played with excellent skill: passing, defending and shooting brilliantly. We then played Heron’s Moor in the semi-finals winning 5-0. We played the final against Portishead where we conceded our only goal against us. This was avery close game with both sides wanting to take control of game play. I am very proud to report we won 2-1 and were crowned the North Somerset High Five Champions. This is a huge achievement for a small school to compete and win this event. Well done to Chloe, Emily, Alice, Ella, Tilly, Melissa and Iona. Thank you also to Mrs Youhill for helping at this event

AFTER SCHOOL NETBALL AND FOOTBALL MATCHES

On 22nd February a team from after school netball club played a match against Locking Primary School. This was a very close game with end to end netball being played. Both teams worked hard to take control of the game. We made good interceptions of the ball to keep our defence strong and showed strong ball passing skills. It was a tightly fought match right up to the final whistle, but St. Anne’s were the victors with a score of 6-5. Well done to Ella, Alice, Tilly, Lucy, Brooke, Melissa, Olivia and Ellie.

On 28th February the whole school netball team played an away match against Backwell Primary School. To allow all the players to play from both sides we played three short games. Our St. Anne’s team played some lovely netball in each game, passing the ball with good control. We maintained a good defence to allow our attackers shots at goal. The final score from all three games meant a win to St. Anne’s of 7-4. Well done to the whole netball team and thank you to parents for their support.

On 1st March we hosted return after school football and netball matches against Heron’s Moor Academy. A team of Y3 and Y4 footballers and Y5 and Y6 netballers each played a game. The football team played brilliantly and showed some lovely team playing skills. The defence worked well allowing the ball to go up field to the attackers. A final score of 4-2 was a win for St. Anne’s. Well done to Jack, Rio, Harrison, Clayton, Jayden, Addi, Luca, Toby and Harvey. In the netball match we played a close game of netball with end to end play. Our team worked hard in defence and centre court play with good ball passing skills to keep Heron’s Moor out of their shooting circle. The result was a close win to St. Anne’s of 6-5. Well done to Chloe, Emily, Iona, Melissa, Amilya, Lucy, Ellie, Alice and Eleanor. Thank you to parents for their support at both games.

On 8th March the whole school netball team played an away match against St. Andrew’s Primary School. St. Anne’s played two games and showed brilliant ability in each game. They put into play all the skills they had learnt at after school club. In the first game our shooters were on fine form with a winning score of 12-0. The second game was end to end netball with both sides working hard to take control of the game, resulting in a win to St. Anne’s with a score of 2-1. Well done to the whole team and thank you to parents for their support at the game

WHEELCHAIR BASKET BALL

On Wednesday 8th February and Thursday 9th February children from Busy Bees, Year one , Two @Hewish  and West Wick and Year three have had the opportunity to take part in a Wheelchair Basket Ball workshop. Kevin Ogborne the head coach of the South West Scorpions Wheelchair Basket Ball Team took these fantastic sessions. The children were able to try out this sport and learn how different it is to play using a wheelchair rather than running around with the ball. This has been a good experience for all the children to understand the differences of playing sports being disabled and able bodied.Year  Four , Five and Six will have their turn in May.

We played 4 games in our pool group losing 3 very close games 1-0, 2-1, 1-0 and a draw of 0-0. The children played really well with wonderful team spirit and determination. The whole team passed the ball well with some great runs at the goal and with Charlie, in goal, making some great saves. The children had lots of enjoyable fun playing their games. We finished on a high playing a friendly match against Wraxall winning 2-1. Well done to Melissa, James, Jacob, Charlie, Mason, Ella-Mae, Olivia and Jay. AFTERSCHOOL NETBALL AND FOOTBALL MATCH

On 16th November a Year 3 and Year 4 football team and a Year 5 and Year 6 Netball team played an away match against Herons Moor Academy. The rain came pouring down, but all the teams played brilliantly considering the terrible weather conditions. In the football match, St Anne’s battled hard and passed the ball well creating good chances at shoots at goal. The final score was a draw. Well done to Harrison, Jack, Clayton, Kameron, Jayden, Luca, Oliver, Eljay and Rio.

The rain made it slippery under foot for the netball match, but the team passed the ball really well around the centre court, defending well to get the ball to our attacking end. We showed good marking skills giving Herons Moor little room to receive the ball. The final score was a win of 3-1 to St Anne’s. Well done to Amilya, Lauren, Tilly, Iona, Lucy, Emily, and Chloe. Thank you to all the wonderful support from the parents.

SCHOOL GAMES CREW TRAINING

On 25th November our School Games Crew took part in a training session at NSETC Weston Academy. The aim of the training session was to support schools in establishing Schools Sports Organising Crews to assist with the promotion/organisation of School Games/Sport in our school. The children were provided with the information and tools to create a Crew within our school. The children received a short background to School Games and then had the opportunity to explore a number of practical (sporting and nonsporting) workshops, including the School games Values. The crew really enjoyed this training session and have come back with some great ideas. Well done to Alice, Eleanor, Luke, Jacob and Charlie

KURLING AND BOCCIA FESTIVAL

On 29th November a team of Year 4 and 5 children took part in a New Age Kurling and Boccia Festival at Priory Academy. This was a noncompetitive event with the children being invited to try out new sports. Boccia is a paralympic event similar to bowls but played sitting down. New Age Kurling has been adapted to be played in a sports hall with small ballbearing on the bottom of the stone so they can be pushed along the floor. The children had a wonderful morning of fun learning how to play these sports. They soon learnt the techniques of the sports and improved as the morning went on. Well done to Darcy, Emilia, William, Samuel, Shania, Sky, James and Leon. Thank you to Mrs Youhill for helping at this event.

CROSS COUNTRY

On Wednesday 5th October children from Year 4 to Year 6 took part in the School Games Level Two Cross Country Event at Hutton Moor Playing Fields. We entered a Year 3 / 4 boys and girls team and a boys and girls team in both Year 5 and Year 6. The Year 3 and 4 children ran 800 metres; this is a fun run to introduce the children to cross country. Both girls and boys in the Year 5 and 6 teams ran 1.2 km. The top 20 runners in these races will be invited to represent North Somerset at the County Cross Country event. The school games value for this event was determination and I challenged the children to complete the course without stopping. The conditions were perfect for running. All the children ran brilliantly and completed the course, which they were all very proud to do. Well done to all the children that took part. Also well done to Talia coming 3rd in the Year 5 girls race, Luca 10th in the Year 5 boys race, Tilly 1st in the Year 6 girls race and Luke 2nd in the Year 6 boys race. ARCHERY

On Sunday 16th October two archery teams took part in an inter schools archery competition. This event was held by Paul Maines from Gordano Valley Archers Club. We were invited to the event as North Somerset winners to compete against the South Gloucestershire winners. This was a wonderful opportunity for the children as they were using live arrows (with points!) which enabled them to experience archery to its full potential. The children took part in a training session to learn how to shoot with the live arrows before they started the tournament. All the children shot their arrow really well and hit many bulls eyes. St Anne’s were crowned the winners. Well done to Mason, Lauren, Brooke, Jacob, Tilly, Chanel, Charlie.H and Ted. Thank you to all the parents for their support at this event.
